VASCO: A petty quarrel took a violent turn when three locals from Utorda allegedly assaulted three policemen from the Indian Reserve Battalion at Utorda beach. Villagers later thrashed two locals, while the third has been arrested by Verna police.
According to Mormugao DySP Laurence D’Souza, three IRB police Devandra Sawant, Venkat Kesvani and Gajanan Madar were standing in a makeshift hut when Thomas Fernandes picked up an altercation with them.
D’Souza further informed that as the police began questioning Fernandes, who was under the influence of alcohol, the accused grabbed a police baton from the cops and started assaulting them.
D’Souza said the incident drew the attention soon two other friends of Fernandes, Agnelo Fernandes and Rony Fernandes, who were having a drink at a nearby shack, rushed to Fernandes’ aid and started assaulting the three police.
Police further informed that some villagers at the beach rushed to the site and tried to separate the two groups. With the three locals failing to stop the fight, the villagers allegedly assaulted Thomas and Agnelo. Thomas was admitted in GMC Hospital in Bambolim, while Agnelo was admitted in Hospicio at Margao. Verna Police has arrested Rony in this connection and Verna PSI Hiru Kavlekar is investigating the case.
