Govt blamed for unregulated growth of security agencies (Herald)

July 1, 2013 TEAM HERALD MARGAO: This may seem unbelievable, but is true. If the Security Association of Goa is to be believed, around 500-odd security services, are operating in a small state like Goa, legally or illegally. Addressing the media, Association President Geoffrey De Souza blamed the apathy of the State government towards the proliferation of the security agencies. “The State government showed no interest in implementing the Central Government Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 to check the unregulated growth of security agencies since the government was interested in going with its Human Resources Corporation for security and housekeeping services”, he said. While analysing the pros and cons of the prevailing situation arising out of the sudden influx of non-professional security agencies, he said, “Our industrialists are responsible for not having a check on their human resources departments, where some who prefer to engage these easy-to-handle agencies, apart from monetary benefits”. He said that multi-national security agencies operating on remote control through their representatives, also contribute to the existing indiscipline among the security personnel. “Unfortunately, during recent years, the professionalism in security services has given way to unhealthy and unethical business in the hands of vested interests, eying only profits. These non-professional agencies outsmarted the professionals and captured the market by aggressive marketing strategies and even through corrupt means. The shortfall in quality of professionalism is being made up with decorative uniforms with ties, peak caps, colourful waistbands and anklets”, he added. He lamented that bureaucrats responsible to monitor the compliance of statutory payments have also contributed to the growth of these non-professional agencies by turning a blind eye towards defaults. http://www.heraldgoa.in/News/Local%20News/Govt-blamed-for-unregulated-growth-of-security-agencies/76351.html
