December air quality in Panaji worrisome - ToI

Panaji: December, peak tourism season, may present stakeholders with enough reasons to smile, but this is the period during which the ambient air quality of the capital city of Panaji suffers due to influx of a large number of vehicles.

Data gathered from ambient air quality monitoring stations installed by the Goa state pollution control board (GSPCB) indicate high particulate matter (PM2.5) during the year end, which is attributed to vehicular emission. GSPCB data also indicted that particulate matter (PM10) is high during December, in Panaji, due to heavy objects like coal, construction and demolition debris.

Data gathered from ambient air quality monitoring stations show figures crossing four times that of PM2.5 and PM10 limit in December, said GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha.

He said that PM2.5 should not exceed 60 microgram per cubic metre and PM10 should not exceed 100 microgram per cubic metre.

On more than two occasions the PM2.5 limit has exceeded in Panaji in October and November. "This owing to two reasons; first is due to heavy vehicular traffic congestion because of tourist inflow, and second because it is winter," Noronha said.
