This
emerged from Forest Minister Alina Saldanha’s written reply to the
House to a question raised by BJP MLA Siddhart Kuncalienkar seeking to
know steps taken by government to create awareness about nature
conservation through related activities.
“The
Forest Department encourages such trekking activities in its Wildlife
Protected Areas. This comprises treks on nature trails, forest areas,
hill peaks etc. As part of nature camps for youth and students, such
trips are arranged on a regular basis,” she said, adding, “Maintenance
of existing nature trails/treks, creation of new nature trails/tracks
wherever feasible, and organizing awareness camps for students and
villagers including moving in mature trails/treks are some steps taken.”
The
Panjim MLA also sought to know whether the government proposes to
construct lodging areas for trekkers on forest land while also creating
accommodation to nature lovers who participate in activities such as
trekking.
In
reply the minister revealed that the department has already made
arrangements at Hattipal adjoining the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary,
Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem in Bhagwan Mahaveer National Park for the same.
