The month of December 2014 was normal as far as minimum and maximum
temperatures are concerned, but a wet spell above normal was witnessed
after many years.
"Rainfall in December itself is unusual. As compared to the last six years or so, the rainfall in December 2014 was ten times above normal," N Haridasan, assistant meteorologist at meteorological centre, Altinho said. The city received 32.0mm on December 12, 2014 and 2.1mm on December 13, 2014. A rainfall of 3.7mm is considered normal in the last month of the year.
While no rainfall had been recorded during this month in last three years, a rainfall of 3.7 mm was recorded on a single day in December 2010 and 7.5 mm in December 2008. The month of December was otherwise normal as far as other parameters are concerned.
The mean maximum temperature during the month was 32.8 degrees Celsius while the average minimum temperature was 21.1 degrees Celsius. A combination of both temperatures, minimum and maximum, showed an average of 26.9 degrees Celsius.
The highest maximum temperature recorded by the meteorological centre was 34.6 degrees Celsius on December 3 and the lowest was 18.0 degrees Celsius on December 6, 2014.
