Oct 17, 2014, 12.50 AM ISTCALANGUTE: The
North Goa tourist taxi owners association (NGTTOA) has opposed the
launch of the 'Women taxi services' by the Goa tourism development
corporation (GTDC).
Ravindra Vengurlekar, vice-president of the NGTTOA, said the rationale behind starting the women taxis is not very clear and would send a wrong signal to tourists, reinforcing the image of Goa as being a place where women were easily available. "In Europe and other places they also have ladies taxis driven by lady drivers, but they are only for women passengers. They are not allowed to drive men," he claimed, wondering whether the women taxis in Goa will be allowed to transport men.
"If they take men passengers then there will also be safety issues. Many a times tourists get violent after getting drunk and the women drivers could be kidnapped and raped," he pointed out. "As it is, women passengers get scared of going in a taxi driven by a man late in the night. We already have a few women taxi drivers for women passengers who insist on female drivers. But if these women taxis transport men, then our livelihood will also be affected," he said.
