TNN | Oct 17, 2014, 12.44 AM ISTCALANGUTE: Irked by the demand of high wages by migrant workers, residents of Candolim will hold a rally on Friday to protest the issue.
Locals of the village, most of who are engaged in the hospitality industry, say that migrant casual and skilled labourers have been demanding unusually high wages and refuse to work for lower pay.
"How can they increase their wages arbitrarily? If taxi drivers overcharge their patrons, the matter is raised in the assembly. If bus fares are to be increased, they have to be notified by the government," a resident pointed out while adding, "As per the labour department, the daily wage due to a casual labourer is Rs 249, but they (labourers) are charging Rs 500 and more. This amounts to the exploitation of local residents who are left with no option but to use the services of migrant labourers. The government should erect boards specifying the wages that can be commanded by skilled and unskilled labourers in the marketplaces where they gather."
