This Lok Sabha Election of 2014 has been an eye-opener in
understanding the extent of social and political disorientation that has
overtaken some sections within the catholic community of Goa. While
each one's personal choice to support a political party must get
respected, the connivance of some Catholics with certain political
forces to distort facts and misinform the public about the role of the
Church in politics is a matter of serious concern.
There appears to be a desperate attempt being made by some
Catholics to blur the Laximan-Rekha between Satan and Saint, Communalism
and Secularism, Good and Evil. The public is being systematically
distracted by hyping the issue of corruption and playing down the
existence of communalism which is prevalent in Goa.
Creating awareness about communalism is labelled as fear mongering
while warning of a nuke threat from a foreign country or terrorism to
garner votes gets cheered as patriotism. One political leader meeting
Bishops in Kerala becomes a sign for inclusiveness but another political
leader meeting an Imaam in Delhi gets termed as polarisation.
It is also evident that some political forces are attempting to
prove that the Church has lost its relevance in Goa's socio-political
scenario. The Church definitely needs to become aware of political
agents that have infiltrated its rank and file and are busy scattering
the flock.
