Mumbai auditor caught taking bribe in Panjim -Herald

February 12, 2013 TEAM HERALD PANJIM: An Assistant Audit officer from the CAG, Mumbai office, was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 20,000 bribe, by CBI in a raid on Monday, outside the EPF office, Panjim. The officer, S Chedda was caught red-handed while accepting the notes dusted with phenotaline powder that leaves one’s hands pink when handled. The team led by SP Prem Kumar and PI Nilesh Shirodkar laid a trap after a complaint was filed by one B Shetye, the canteen contractor of the National Institute of Technology that the audit officer was demanding a bribe for waiving off service tax of Rs 3,60,000. Even after the contractor insisted that he was not supposed to pay him any service tax as NIT was an educational institution and the food was served at a subsidized rate, the officer refused to listen and demanded the bribe to ‘settle everything’. Shetye was asked to deliver the money at noon at Panjim. Accordingly, the raid was planned and as the money was delivered outside the EPF office at Patto, where the unsuspecting Chedda was apprehended.
