Is The Water From Opa And Selaulim Safe For Drinking?
Is The Water From Opa And Selaulim Safe For Drinking?
For potable water 85% of Goa’s population is dependent on Opa and Selaulim, but now both these water treatment plants are threatened by increasing mining activity in surrounding areas, the manganese content in the water from selaulim was beyond permissible limits few days back and the water supply from the water treatment plant was curtailed, The same problem is observed in the water coming from Opa forcing curtailment of water
The water turbidity is high in the water coming from both these water treatment plants. 19 mines are functioning in and around Selaulim Water reservoir area, all these mines are within 500 meters radius of the Selaulim Dam, and there are 21 mines operating in and around Opa water treatment plant. If timely measures are not taken there is grave threat of water contamination, will the Government ban mining activity in the vicinity of both the Dams?
