PANJIM: An overwhelming 70 per cent Goans have said that fighting for Statehood in 1987 was a wrong decision on the part of the political class, according to a Special 65th Independence Anniversary Survey conducted by Herald in the run up to August 15, 2012.
Twenty per cent said it was a correct decision, while 10 per cent were uncertain on the issue of Goa’s political status within the Indian Union according to the Survey conducted across seven talukas of Goa.
Given the huge debt burden of the State after statehood and the uncontrolled inflation and price rise, Goans feel that statehood was a wrong decision and had political undertones since they feel the MLAs benefitted as the seats were increased to 40 from 30.
