The GMC Dean said that this is a spark which has now become a social fire as far as the downsides of alcohol consumption are concerned.

Panjim: The Dean of Goa Medical College, Dr Shivanand Bandekar has said that almost 20% of deaths occurring in the state are directly or indirectly due to alcohol consumption.

He also said that a partial prohibition, restriction or reduction of alcohol use can help avoid numerous deaths in Goa.

Padmashri awardee Dr Abhay Bang and Dr Bandekar were present at MOACON, Maharashtra Orthopaedics Association Conference held at a starred hotel on Saturday.

Dr Bang said that the biggest killer of people in the country between the ages of 15 and 50 is alcohol. He has through social movements succeeded in completely prohibiting alcohol in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra for the last 35 years, which is the longest-running Alcohol prohibition in the country. “It is necessary to for Goa and Maharashtra to take firm steps on the problem of alcoholism,” said the Padmashri awardee Doctor. “Alcohol and Tourism in Goa is for the people and the government to decide how much it benefits and how much loss it is causing to the State,” said Dr Bang.

Dr Bandekar revealed that in the monthly death statistics 15 to 20 persons are dying due to alcoholic liver diseases. “In GMC at any given time there will be terminally ill alcoholic liver disease cases,” said Dean.

These are direct deaths. Deaths occurring from quarrels, fights, stabbings and accidents under the influence of alcohol account for 10 deaths per month. “Almost 25 to 30 people are losing their lives directly or indirectly due to alcohol out of 120 deaths recorded,” said Dr Bandekar.

The GMC Dean said that this is a spark which has now become a social fire as far as the downsides of alcohol consumption are concerned.
