Calangute: A number of untoward incidents involving tourists were reported during the extended Holi weekend which witnessed hordes of visitors in the state.
One tourist, who according to the Drishti Lifesaving Agency was reportedly intoxicated, died at Candolim beach.
Also, a minor boy from Jharkhand who was reported missing at Baga beach was later traced at Sinquerim late in the evening following a four-hour long search by lifeguards..
Lifeguards had a tough time maintaining control over unruly tourists.
“People were drinking all over the beach, and many of them were also passing out and sleeping on the beach itself,” Ashwin Ghad, a lifeguard said. “It becomes difficult to control them in their intoxicated state as they insist on entering the water. Also, many of them are from Karnataka and other neighbouring states, so they cannot comprehend when we make announcements in Hindi or English. Hence, we have learnt some basic words in Kannada to convey our message,” he added.
Tourism stakeholders said that though the police stop tourists from drinking on the beach, the sheer number of people visiting the area makes it impossible to control them.
“They get so drunk that the moment they enter the water, they collapse after losing control and we have to rush to pull them back to safety,” a lifeguard said.
Many accidents involving two-wheelers and four-wheelers were also reported over the weekend.
