Sarpanch Sandeep Vazarkar said the panchayat has spent Rs 36.30 lakh during the year 2016-17 towards collection of garbage, while the panchayat has received only Rs 16.62 lakh by way of garbage tax.
"The panchayat is charging Rs 200 per year to each household towards garbage collection and to reduce the losses, the panchayat proposes to increase garbage tax to Rs 360 per year. Similarly, for old houses, the house tax is Rs 30 only. This house tax needs to be enhanced," said Vazarkar.
Sorter D'Souza strongly opposed the proposition of the panchayat to increase house and garbage tax.
"Several new business establishments, offices, showrooms, restaurants, multi-storey buildings, etc, have come up in the panchayat area. The panchayat should conduct a survey and collect taxes from each and every business establishment and flat owners. If this is done, the panchayat will get sufficient revenue and there won't be any need to hike house and garbage tax," said D'Souza.
Since the villagers endorsed D'Souza's view, the panchayat dropped the proposal to increase house and garbage tax.
Vazarkar said there are about 1,535 business establishments in Socorro and some of them are paying only Rs 6 per year as professional tax and it is high time that this professional tax is revised. Hence, the panchayat proposes to raise it to Rs 500 per year.
After detailed discussion, the panchayat granted consent to the panchayat to increase the minimum professional tax to Rs 500 per year.
Vazarkar said with effect from November, the panchayat will appoint a new contractor for collection of garbage on door-to-door basis and from November 5, the panchayat will distribute two small dust bins to each household for keeping wet and dry garbage separately and sought cooperation from the villagers.
Rosita Fonseca suggested that the panchayat should form garbage committee ward-wise to monitor collection of garbage.
Udai Chari said he does not have toilet in his house and requested the panchayat to help him in this matter. The issues of stray dogs, cattle menace, painting of speed breakers, cutting of bushes by the roadsides, etc, were also discussed in the gram sabha.
Earlier, Sarpanch Vazarkar welcomed the gathering. Panchayat Secretary Chetan Shirodkar read the meeting of the last gram sabha.
Wilber Ticlo protested and said the gram sabha was not held as per rules and he has registered a complaint in this regard with Block Development Office and the police.
Panch Sheetal Arolkar proposed the vote of thanks. Dinesh Chodankar was observer for the gram sabha.
