Injustice to tax payer (Letter)

(Letter published in Gomantak Times, 2nd August 2013) The decision of the Goa Government to relax eligibility norms for truck owners to avail of mining relief scheme is an injustice to the tax-payer. Mining has done irreparable damage to the ecology of Goa and the health and well being of innocent citizens. After stopping mining, the rainfall has also improved. But now we see that the victims themselves are made to pay for the sins of those who perpetrated or colluded in the crime. We should not have sympathy for these truck owners because in the hey days they were ruthless and abusive to those who were protesting the injustices caused by unethical mining. They have even run over innocent and helpless people on the roads. The Government should first make a detailed balance sheet to ascertain the profits and losses from this mining activity before bailing out the accomplices in crime with tax-payers money. -Soter
