PANAJI: After dishing out a monthly dole to truck owners, the state government has now exempted them from road tax for the next one year due to the crisis from the closure of mining industries in the state since September 2012.
Transport director Arun Desai said the government has exempted motor vehicles engaged in transportation of mineral ore from the payment of tax for the period April 01, 2013 to March 31, 2014. The claimant (truck owner) should be a registered owner of the vehicle and no claim from a third party shall be entertained for granting exemption from payment of tax, Desai said in the notification. From P 1
He also said that truck owners shall produce evidence of exclusive use of the vehicle for transportation of mineral ore to obtain the tax exemption. "The claimant shall produce a certificate from the regional transport authority certifying that the vehicle was not granted any temporary permit to operate in any other state," Desai said.
Truck owners seeking exemption shall be those who have been paying the motor vehicle tax at the rate prescribed for the mining vehicle and whose vehicle tax due should have been cleared up to March 31, 2013.
Desai said that the truck owners shall produce a certificate from the mines department certifying that the vehicle has been registered as a mining vehicle.
Truck owners will also have to produce a certificate from the management of the respective mines or operator of mines specifying that the vehicle was engaged in their mines and also the period of employment.
In another decision, the government has also exempted barge owners from paying tax for the next one year. "The government of Goa being of the opinion that it is necessary and expedient in public interest to do so, hereby exempts the barges which, prior to September 11, 2012, were used exclusively for transportation of mineral ore in the waterways comprised within the state of Goa, from the payment to tax levied under Section 3 of the said Acts," captain of ports James Braganza said in a notification. tnn
