MARGAO: Saying that the Church and tiatrists have preserved and protected Konkani language in the state, Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva on Wednesday said he will continue to fight to take Konkani in Romi script to greater heights.
He was speaking at a function organized by Dalgado Konknni Akademi to celebrate Konknni Cinema Day at the Ravindra Bhavan, here, today.
“The Church and the tiatrists have protected Konkani in Romi script. The government has done nothing. This is the reason why I asked the government for the budget estimates in Konkani in Romi script since I cannot understand Devnagiri and Marathi. There may be some MLAs who might not have liked my stance, but I am a Goan and my language is Konkani in Romi script,” Caitu said, amidst thunderous applause from the audience.
Saying it’s his duty to protect his mother tongue, he stressed on the need to make use of Konkani in day-to-day life. “We know that English helps us to earn a living. But at the same time, we cannot keep Konkani language in the kitchen. It should flourish and be protected,” he said, while asserting that he would work for recognition of Konkani language in Romi script.
Dalgado Konknni Akademi President Premanand Lotlikar reminded that it was on April 24, 1950, that the first Konkani film “Mogacho Anvddo” by Al-Jerry Braganza was screened.
