Permission for live entertainment irks Calangute, Baga residents
CALANGUTE: Residents of Calangute and Baga in particular are irked with the authorities for reportedly allowing a live musical entertainment programme at Baga on December 24 and 25.
According to the residents, there will be chaos and road blockages all along the road due to the live entertainment at Baga grounds. The parishioners going to Churches for midnight celebrations and Mass will be inconvenienced.
Speaking to Herald, a resident of Baga said: “I don’t understand how such an event is being allowed when the villagers are busy preparing for Christmas and will have to attend midnight or morning masses.”
“We have no objection for such happening on any days and why do we need live entertainment events on the eve of Christmas? Besides, there is no Mass for elders in the Chapel so everyone will have to attend Mass at Calangute Church and travelling will be very difficult. Why the concerned authorities did not think twice before deciding on the venue on the eve of Christmas,” asked the villager.
The Anderson couple said they came to take part in the midnight Mass at St Alex Church Calangute like the earlier years. “But we may have to re-think on our decision as Christmas in Calangute is being commercialized with no benefit either spiritually or financially to the locals,” said the couple.
Efforts to contact Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar proved futile as his mobile phone was switched off.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said the event is being held on the GTDC ground which has been leased out to a private party. “But I am not aware of the permissions for the event,” added Lobo.
