PANJIM, FEB 24
There is a lot of money in Goa, but it isn’t going into the pockets of the State’s aam admi. That is the inescapable conclusion from two different sets of statistics about the State, by two separate agencies.
In 2009-10, Goa’s gross state domestic product (GSDP) increased by 13.03 per cent. This is what Union Minister of State for Planning Ashwani Kumar informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Two north-eastern states – Arunchal Pradesh and Mizoram – clocked the highest economic growth rates in the country. While Arunachal notched up a fairytale rate of 22.43 per cent, Mizoram registered a GSDP growth of 13.95 per cent. All figures are for the financial year 2009-10. Rajasthan, at 3.95 per cent, was the lowest among the 32 States and Union territories in the country. Two other States that lagged were Karnataka at 4.99 per cent and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 4.39 per cent. Altogether, 19 States and Union territories had GSDP increase rates of over 8 per cent, the national average.
However, the growth of wages in Goa did not come anywhere close. At 4.2 per cent, the rate of increase in wages in Goa was the second-lowest in the country, according to the TeamLease Annual Temp Salary Primer 2011, a comprehensive report on the dynamics of the temporary employment market, which indicates real increases and decreases in wages.
Bangalore stayed at number 1, with a salary growth rate of 8.3 per cent. Mumbai (7.8 per cent) was second and Delhi (7.3 per cent) overtook Chennai to come third. Only Indore (3.9 per cent) had slower wage increases than Goa. Even Jaipur (4.4 per cent) was marginally better.
Which are the industries and cities that pay the best? It is Chennai for the automobile industry, Delhi for food & hospitality, Mumbai for healthcare and pharma and – last but best – Bangalore for IT, going up at a mouth-watering average of 12 per cent per year.
The survey was carried out across 318 different job profiles, spread over 13 industries in eight functional domains, located in 14 major cities – Goa, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Indore, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur, Pune, Delhi and Kochi.
