Cop’s arrest exposes Goa-Belgaum drug nexus

The arrest of a Goa Police head constable along with four others on charges of carrying Hashish worth Rs 26 lakh in Belgaum has exposed the growing nexus between criminals in Belgaum and Goa.
In June 2007, in a major breakthrough exposing the international links in drugs case, Belgaum Police had arrested three Nepali nationals including a woman. The accused were identified as professional carriers and were caught with 10 kg 300 gms of Hashish. The trio had also confessed their links with Goa.
In June 2009, the Karnataka Railway Police had nabbed a gang involved in train robberies on Vasco-Hubli train route.
In July 2010, Belgaum Police had recovered an Innova car from Arpora beach in north Goa allegedly with changed number plates. Highly placed sources had informed Herald that a drug peddler who operated from Shiroda beach in Sindhudurg had used the Sindhudurg-Goa border to accomplish the drug peddling and car lifting crime.
In November 2010, Belgaum Police had arrested Rajesh Vishram Naik, a construction worker from Pernem, and recovered two country-made pistols from him.
Several cases of bootlegging including illicit liquor trade are between Belgaum and Goa has now become a regular affair.
