AJI: Shack owners will no longer have to dismantle their shacks at the end of the tourist season, as per a ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) proposal. The condition imposed by the ministry being that they conduct no business from the premises during the monsoon period.
Coastal Zone Regulation Notification, 2011, requires that shacks be dismantled at the end of May, with no structures allowed on the beach till August.
Now, in a draft amendment to the Coastal Zone Regulation Notification, 2011, which will bring cheer to scores of shack owners, MoEF proposes to facilitate beach shack allottees to maintain their structures for the period between June and August.
"Such structures shall not be removed and dismantled during the month of June to August. Provided that the facilities in the structures shall remain non-operational during the month of June to August," the proposed notification states.
Beach shack operators had been demanding for some years that they be allowed to keep their shack structure during monsoon the period as well, as this would reduce their cost of operations.
Shack operators claim that most of them spend a lakh or more in erecting shacks.
While earlier licences issued for erection of beach shacks were valid for a period of one year, the government changed its beach shack policy in 2012, increasing the validity period to three years. And, at the end of every season, shack operators had to dismantle their structures.
