The sudden and undue rise in hyper sensitivity over the sacrifices of the armed forces on India’s border is an insult to the rest of the citizens who are also contributing towards the safety and health of this nation.
On the contrary, the confrontation resorted to by some ex-servicemen who appear to be in league with the right-wing political forces against ordinary civilians on the pretext of opposing sedition and insult to the armed forces is only selfish and bad public relations for the armed forces.
One is led to wonder whether such jingoism is a precursor to fascist rule to establish the idea of ‘Bharat’ as propounded by Hindutva fanatics.
The ex-servicemen probably forget that the power of the armed forces to repulse the enemy on the borders is possible only if there is peace and cooperation of civilians within the nation.
So also, even the health and sanitation forces in this country risk their life combating dreaded contagious diseases, cleaning sewers and lifting garbage often without the basic safety equipment and minimum financial benefits.
The farmer and his entire family give their sweat and blood to feed this nation again without any sort of financial security or even retirement benefits.
The millions of labourers in this country, who help set up infrastructure and keep the economy rolling often without just wages and guarantee for the future, are also sacrificing their lives for the nation.
So, let us remember that every productive citizen in this country is sacrificing his or her life in their particular area of expertise and together with the armed forces is securing the well being of this nation.
