Of 800 govt primary schools, 725 have Marathi as MoI - Herald

PANJIM: Goa government, the largest shareholder in the educational scene as state-run institutions outnumber aided and unaided institutions, has only 22 schools in which Konkani is the Medium of Instruction (MoI). 
Of 800 government primary schools, 725 have Marathi as the Medium of Instruction (MoI) as against a mere 22 in Konkani while 16 schools are in both – Konkani and Marathi.
Education Department data for the year 2015-16 indicates that there are 930 state-run primary schools, middle schools, high school and higher secondaries compared to 818 aided and unaided institutions.
Under the MoI category, 725 government primary schools imparted education in Marathi in 2015-16 as against 92 aided and unaided primary schools. Whereas, 40 aided and unaided primary schools imparted education in Konkani medium compared to 22 government primary schools. While no government primary school has English as the MoI, there are 240 aided and unaided primary schools imparting education in English. A total of 777 primary and higher secondary aided and unaided schools have English as MoI.
Of the total schools, the maximum 129 government schools are in Sattari, followed by 128 in Ponda, 96 in Bicholim, 90 in Pernem and the least 35 in Mormugao. The tourist popular taluka Bardez has 79 government schools while Tiswadi 46. As against this, the highest 178 aided and unaided institutions exist in Salcete, while Bardez and Tiswadi rank second and third with 150 and 115 schools respectively.   
The figures further reveal that the State has an overall 1190 primary schools, 396 high schools, 96 higher secondary schools and 66 middle schools.
