MARGAO:
The Maina Curtorim police on Monday arrested Ariston D'Mello, 26, who
hosted his birthday party at home at Maina, Curtorim, on Saturday and
Sunday, which led to the death of two persons. Police suspect Parag
Raikar, 26, and Rodson Monteiro, 27 to have died of drug overdose.
D'Mello has been booked under Section 304 IPC (culpable homicide not
amounting to murder) and under sections contained in the Narcotic Drugs
and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
The Maina Curtorim police also booked an offence under the same charges against Mathew (full name not known) who, the police said, was also an organizer of the party. Mathew has since been untraceable, police sources added.
Dy SP Mohan Naik who is supervising the case, told TOI that a couple of names have come up during the investigations and the police are further probing their links in the drug trade. Witnesses have told the police, police sources said, that a drink believed to have been spiked with drugs, was circulated for consumption at the party. The drink was referred to as 'holy water' at the party. The police are also investigating that aspect as well.
The postmortem reports of the two deceased have been kept reserved by doctors at the Hospicio hospital, pending their viscera examination. The viscera will be sent to the forensic laboratory at Hyderabad for examination.
Police sources added that blood and urine samples of those who attended the party have been sent for narcotic analysis as a part of the police investigations.
Following the deaths of the two persons, Maina Curtorim police had on Sunday booked the case as unnatural deaths.
Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, addressing mediapersons on Monday, demanded that the police and administration "go into the roots of the problem" to weed out the drug menace.
"I have time and again demanded that the police keep surveillance over suspected elements in the area," Lourenco said. He demanded that the police bring the accused to book within the next 10 days.
