Panaji:
The number of registered unemployed people in the state has risen in
the last six months by 27,000 persons. The development comes in the
backdrop of a continued standstill in the mining industry and a poor
tourist season.
As on December-end, department of labour and employment sources said the figure of unemployed persons in Goa stands at 1.37 lakh. Data released by the directorate of census operations in June this year indicated 1.10 lakh persons, between the ages of 15 and 59, were unemployed in Goa.
With a total of 1,37,708 people looking for jobs, around 10% of Goa's population stands unemployed at the end of 2014.
In South Goa, 55,508 people registered themselves at the employment exchange, while the number stands at 82,200 for unemployed persons in North Goa. Sources said the unemployment number is much higher as a vast percentage of the population refrains from registering themselves with the employment exchange bureau.
As per the 2011 census, Goa's population stood at 14.59 lakh, up from 13.48 lakh in 2001. While the population is likely to have increased at a modest phase since 2011, the mining ban has caused a far bigger impact on the unemployment ratio.
"If you see across the industry we don't have employable people. What we need are skilled and qualified people," confederation of Indian industry (CII) Goa state council chairman Kirit Maganlal said. "The government and the industry are working together and we should give ourselves six months time for employment to pick up." He's referring to the government's investment promotion board, which he is a part of, that recently cleared the proposals of six industries.
Sources said the high number of unemployed in the state is not lost on the government, which recently set up a state human resources development corporation to offer skill training to unemployed youngsters, and which has also pushed for the Goa investment policy and set up the Goa investment promotion board which among other things aims to create 50,000 jobs over the next five years.
