PANAJI/MARGAO: The tourist taxi problem that brought tourism to a standstill in Goa for a few days in February last year is simmering again, and carries the threat of damaging tourism prospects this season as well.
A coach carrying 18 Russian travel agents and journalists from a starred hotel in Varca were allegedly stopped on Tuesday morning by a group of taxi drivers stationed outside the hotel, and a female representative of the travel company was intimidated. The Russian group, in Goa since October 24 on a 'Fam trip' (familiarization trip), were being taken on an excursion.
Ernest Dias, chief operating officer, Sita, who engaged with the travel company, told TOI, "A group of roughly 10-15 taxi drivers objected to the travel agents taking a coach. They also behaved roughly with the Russian representative. They asked her to produce her travel documents. I wonder what image of Goa this group will take back home." He hoped the "government will notice the issue at least now" and "take stern action against guilty taxi operators".
