NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi's plan to create 50 showpiece tourism circuits to attract visitors is threatening to be derailed by over-enthusiastic states. Nearly all the states have packed in all major tourism attractions instead of a few specific destinations in a please-all list. So Goa has included nearly 34 beaches in just one circuit while Karnataka has added 37 destinations. Not to be left behind Kerala has included 46 destinations while Delhi has one circuit that extends from Safdarjung Tomb to Central Vista at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The list has been finalized by the tourism ministry in consultation with the states. But ministry officials have been left nonplussed by this move to pack in as many destinations as possible. "Each state was given one tourist circuit that they could choose with bigger states getting two each. However, the states have made a mockery of the whole process by putting in all the possible destinations they could think of. This defeats the whole purpose of developing infrastructure and tourism facilities at 2-3 places," a source said.
Delhi has submitted three circuits including Mehrauli archaeological park- including Qutab complex, Jogmaya Temple, MCD library, Metcalfe Lake, Mehrauli village, Zafar Mahal, Hauz-i-Shamsi, Jahaaz Mahal while Surajkund circuit includes Tuglaqabad, Adilabad and Firoz Shah Kotla. The Lodi Road circuit includes Safdarjung Tomb, Lodi Garden, Purana Qila, Hauz Khas village, Shahjahanabad (Mutiny Memorial, Coronation Park, Central Vista, Rashtrapati Bhavan).
Similarly, Goa has packed in all the beaches in just one circuit from Bambolin, Dona Paula, Miramar, Calangute, Baga, Anjuna, Mobor, Betul, Palolem to Concana besides development of jetties at Calangute, Baga, Candolim and development of ropeway. One Kerala circuit covers nearly 160 kms from Kozhikode to Bekul in the north while a circuit in Karnataka stretches 200 kms from Hubli up to Hampi.
Creation of 50 tourism circuits across the country was announced by finance minister in the Union budget this year.
