Jonathan Rodrigues,TNN | Aug 10, 2014, 01.53 AM ISTPorvorim: Goan legislators on Friday expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the state's rivers, some of which are considered the state's "lifelines" and demanded that the government address the problems of siltation, pollution, encroachments on river banks, etc. Some MLAs even proposed a special task force to study and resolve the problems.
The issue was raised by Sakhali BJP MLA Pramod Sawant who moved a private member's resolution in the legislative assembly to urge the government to take measures to save the state's rivers from various problems.
In his reply, water resources minister Dayanand Mandrekar ? and also chief minister Manohar Parrikar ? said that the issue is huge and involves a number of departments like captain of ports, environment, panchayats, etc.
Mandrekar said that the government does have a master plan for the protection of Goa's rivers and that it is being implemented in a phased manner. The government has spent around 71.52 crore on various works pertaining to rivers like dredging, desilting, building walls for riverbank protection, etc. Mandrekar said the protection of rivers requires a lot of money and that the state government will also request the centre for funds for the purpose. The resolution was withdrawn following an assurance that the government would take up the issue seriously.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/MLAs-fret-about-condition-of-states-rivers/articleshow/39909516.cms
