TNN | Aug 7, 2014, 01.58 AM ISTPANAJI: In the two decades that followed Goa's liberation, the state's population growth gained speed with a rise by 34% in the '70s and 26% in the '80s. But it has only been a downward trend, since. According to the latest data released under census 2011, Goa's population has grown only by 8.23% since the 2001 census.
This is the lowest population growth Goa has seen in the last 40 years. As per the census 2011, Goa's population stands at 14,58,545 - 7,39,140 males and 7,19,405 females.
The 11 lakh population added to the state's numbers in the 10 years preceding 2011 is the lowest growth in the post liberation years with the highest of over 2.12 lakh growth in numbers from 1971 to 1981.
Goa's share in the country's total population is just 0.12%.
From 1961 to 1971, the population growth rate was 34.77%. It declined to 26.74% between 1971 and 1981 and to 16.08% between 1981 and 1991.
The growth rate in North Goa is marginally lower at 7.84% to that in South Goa of 8.73%. Population of North Goa district is higher at 8.18 lakh as against South Goa district's 6.40 lakh.
Sex ratio in Goa as per 2011 census is 968 females per 1,000 males, which is above the national average of 960. Further, the sex ratio in Goa has improved from 960 in 2001 census to 968 in 2011. However, the child sex ratio has declined from 938 in the last census to 920 as per the latest census.
