CALANGUTE: Calangute panchayat member Geeta Parab said there should be restrictions on pub timings, and they should not be allowed to stay open all night. Calangute has the highest number of pubs and nightclubs in Goa.
Referring to the debate over pubs, Geeta, a former sarpanch, said all pubs and nightclubs in the state cannot be clubbed in the same bracket. "In Calangute there are all kinds of pubs and nightclubs, and some of them are dance bars and pick-up joints. You will come across advertisements and signs outside these places offering? Free entry for ladies. Unlimited free drinks for ladies all night'; every night. Now why will anybody give free entry and unlimited free drinks to women all night? What is the motive?" she questioned. "Obviously there is something more is going on," she said.
"The Maharashta government has banned dance bars because of which the dancers have all come to Goa and they go to these places which give unlimited drinks to women and solicit customers," she claimed.
She also said that such places lead to ruination of young men and their families because they spend their hard-earned money on drinking without any limit. "We want good tourists to come. But are these tourists who drink good tourists? Just because they come on a holiday doesn't mean they should be allowed to do anything they want and drink anywhere they want," she said, adding that these nightspots need some restrictions.
