Public negligence leads to crime: Police (ToI)

MARGAO: To tackle the rising number of burglary cases reported in Salcete, the police have decided to hold public interactions with villages.

Margao DySP Mohan Naik said that they would hold at least two police-public interactions every year in each police station. He added that such public meetings have been organized in some villages where the police tried to explain to the people about what kind of steps can be taken by the public to prevent such crimes.

It is to be noted that this is based on the directives issued by the district collector who recently held a review meeting with the police in view of the rising crime cases across the four Salcete police stations, namely, Margao, Maina Curtorim, Cuncolim and Colva. When the police gave excuses that in some cases, the public were negligent, the collector instructed the police to hold an awareness campaign in sensitive localities.

The police stated that the majority of the theft cases had occurred because the doors were not properly locked, windows not latched properly or the lack of proper security- like grills for their windows. They have also advised the public to ensure that their expensive personal items such as jewellery be guarded and kept at a safe location that is unknown to domestic help.

Police sources added that they will start special training for police personnel on detecting robbery cases for which they are planning to rope in experts.
