CALANGUTE:
Only five cases of drunken driving have been booked by the Calangute
traffic cell since January this year. Talking to TOI, sources in the
cell said though the figure may appear small?given that Calangute is
considered the ?party capital' of Goa with thousands of tourists pouring
in every day?they have booked 230 persons, mostly tourists, for rash
and negligent driving. No fatalities have been reported this year. The
traffic cell has only one alcometer.
Besides this, Calangute police have also booked a large number of cases against tourists who cause nuisance in public under the influence of liquor and get into drunken brawls. In addition, Indian Reserve Battalion personnel who patrol the beaches have also fined a large number of tourists for drinking in public on the beach. The tourist security force has also been cracking down on liquor vendors on the beach and has made a large number of seizures.
Sources in the hospitality industry say the number of cases booked for drunken driving and the absence of fatalities is because most tourists stay in hotels or resorts in Calangute itself. So while they may consume a lot of liquor in bars, pubs and other nightspots, they simply stagger back to their hotel rooms in the vicinity. With dozens of bars, pubs and nightspots located all along the Baga-Calangute-Candolim belt, in close proximity to hotels and resorts, the chances of accidents are less, claim sources.
They point out an inevitable ?danger' to tourists. Many tourists, after drinking till the late hours, end up leaving their hotel room doors unlocked or windows open while they go into deep sleep. Taking advantage of this, petty thieves enter the rooms and steal the tourists' valuables.
