CM promises ‘justice’ to 13 HIV positive students, after they were moved far away to another school
School buckles under ‘parent pressure’, acts even before CM manages to give justice to shift students to far away school only for “positive’ children; Education director’s promise of issuing instruction to school to admit all students may be too late
TEAM HERALD
PANJIM:
Now here is the actual sad story. The State government has reacted so
late to the controversy over admitting 13 HIV positive students that the
Rivona school buckling under pressure has sent them to a school and a
centre in another corner of the State. Ironically, the Chief Minister’s
statement of giving justice to these kids came after they were moved out
of Rivona. The issue now is what happens to the remaining 23 children
from the same orphanage who are now facing discrimination from the other
parents of the Rivona school children.
The
Education Department is conveying a meeting tomorrow to try and hammer
out a solution even as the department has decided on the position it
would take on the issue.
“Tomorrow
is the meeting of the South (Goa) Education Commission for Child
Protection,” the Director of Education Anil Powar said. The department
said that this committee looks after such issues.
When
asked about the department’s position on the issue, Powar said that the
“education departments position is that no one can say no to admitting
these students. We will go as per the law.”
That’s
easier said than done. With adamant insensitive parents pushing their
way and forcing the school, the government needs to do some catching up
to try and even reach the law.
