PANJIM: Goa Police will increase night patrolling in the wake of bars being allowed to remain open beyond 11 pm even as the department claims liquor is not the cause of brawls.
“It will increase the need to be watchful…but we cannot be linking a crime with the bar being open” DGP T N Mohan said during an informal interaction with the media on Friday.
This, even as the government has kept on hold its decision to issue new licences for extended timings of bars from 11 pm to 1 am and till 4 am.
Mohan however refrained from discussing at length since the decision is currently being reconsidered by the government following opposition from civil rights groups. He nonetheless, commenting on the sword attack outside Down The Road pub, saying it cannot be linked with the bar timing issue.
“This would have happened anywhere at any time given the provocation…could contribute to provocation being triggered faster. One incident does not make the whole scenario,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police department conceded that house-breaking thefts have been on the rise and informed that they are drawing up a mechanism to curb the menace. In the recent past, Goa has witnessed major burglaries and police have recently achieved a breakthrough in three such cases with the arrest of history sheeter Prakash Patil on Wednesday night.
“We have had a history of house-breaking thefts in Goa for nearly 10 years with at least 300 cases reported a year… the detection rate is also low,” he said. Fortunately, he said Goa is not prone to sensational crimes unlike the major cities across the country.
Mohan also spoke about strengthening the police force to control crime as 600-odd constables and 105 PSI recruits will be completing their training this year. Mohan informed that they will be deployed at police stations and at various units where shortage of manpower is an issue.
