PANAJI: There has been a rise in vehicular accidents involving two-wheeler riders in the last four months.
Forty-nine riders have died in road accidents since January this year compared to 28 for the same period last year.
Accidents involving two-wheelers increased from 753 in 2013 (January-April) to 852 this year, prompting the transport department to act.
Officials, unable to ascertain the exact reasons for the huge increase in accidents involving two-wheelers, blame it on the "reckless riding".
Beginning May 10, officials of the transport department will start an extensive enforcement drive to book those riding/driving in a negligent manner.
The special drive will be undertaken in view of increased accident deaths involving two-wheeler riders in the first quarter of 2014 in comparison to the first four months of 2013.
Transport director Arun Desai said it is a matter of serious concern that the number of accidents have increased during the first four months of January 2014.
While the total number of accidents this year as compared to the first quarter of last year is relatively less, fatal accidents have increased. During the first quarter of 2013, 1,164 accidents were reported whereas the number this year until April-end, is 78.
What's worrisome is there have been more accidents involving two-wheeler riders. During last year's first quarter, 753 accidents involving two-wheelers were reported whereas this year, it is 852.
The enforcement officers will also crackdown on vehicles with tinted glasses and fancy headlights.
Violators will, henceforth, be charged under Section 192 (1) of the Central Motor Vehicle Act, that provides for imposing higher penalty.
For the first violation, the section provides for imposing a fine of not less than 2000, and for the second and subsequent offences, the offender can be penalized with either a fine not less than 5,000 extendable up to 10,000 or can be fined with minimum imprisonment of three months extended up to one year.
Incidents of racing on bikes will not be taken lightly, henceforth. Desai warned that officials are watching where such racing episodes are taking place.
The violators will be dealt with strongly, cancelling registration of the bike and licence as well.
