PANAJI: All five water reservoirs in the state have adequate raw water to last for a month. The water levels in the reservoirs this May, is more or less equal to the level for the corresponding period in 2013.
Since April taps in some parts of Goa have run dry and with the monsoon some 15 to 20 days away, people are worried.
A water resources department (WRD) official said the water level at the reservoirs is sufficient to supply water for a month. "It will be a problem only if the monsoon does not arrive in the first week of June," he said.
The WRD official said that in case of a delay in the arrival of the monsoon they will be able to tide over the problem in North Goa by sourcing water from the Tillari irrigation project. Pernem, Bardez, Bicholim and Tiswadi talukas benefit from the Tillari project, whose water is used for domestic and irrigation purposes.
South Goa largely depends on Selaulim reservoir for its water. The supply, especially in the summer months, is irregular in some parts of Mormugao. PWD officials said the problem will be completely solved once water projects under construction are completed in the next two to three years.
Last week PWD minister Ramkrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar had said that water shortage in some parts is not entirely due to scarcity of water at source. He had said that the problem is mostly limited to tail end users or elevated areas and added that often a breakdown in water supply is a result of power failure.
