Calangute is 'most preferred' for flesh trade (ToI)

PANAJI: The tourist hotspot Calangute has become a preferred area of operation for prostitution rackets. The commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) activity is more concentrated within Calangute police jurisdiction than any other tourist place in Goa, says a report released on Tuesday by a social organization, ARZ.

The data was collected from 300 victims rescued between the period 2010 and 2014. A study of statistical data on CSE in Goa, reveals that 45.7% raids busting prostitution rackets were in Calangute.

Calangute is preferred because it's a hot tourist destination. Also, more domestic tourists visit Calangute than any other beach, pointed out Arun Pandey, director of ARZ in his presentation. The study also revealed an interesting trend as to where and how prostitution happens in the coastal belt.

Of the raids and rescues conducted in Calangute, 56.9% conducted their business from hotels and 19.4% operated through massage parlours.

The study also showed that night clubs and events are used for soliciting clients. In Calangute, the report said 59.3% sought clients in the night clubs and the rest through events.

"Girls are let on the dance floor with directions to attract clients. Most of the time rooms are available within the premises of the club," said Pandey. This modus operandi came to light during police raids.

Another trend observed is that conferences are looked at as potential areas to source clients. The method followed is girls are invited at the end of the conference for a dance and men attending the show make their pick, he pointed out.

Nepali girls, he said are more into this kind of activity and lured to Goa with job prospects of dancing at cultural programmes. But what awaits them is sexual exploitation as they are pushed on the dance floors of night clubs. Commercial sexual activities are also conducted in the guise of escort services. Event based CSE is also prevalent in Anjuna as well as Panaji.

Soliciting of clients also happens at Calangute beach because of its touristic importance. Pandey said it's a myth that prostitution happens when individual women desire to sell their bodies. The fact is that it is the result of trafficking, he said. Some rescued victims have told us that they never wanted to be in flesh trade, he said.

The study also hinted that trafficking is taking place in areas that are characterized by poor economic development, internal conflict and poor law and order. Also, majority of the victims came from rural background regardless of their nationality.
