PANAJI: The government has presently given permission to altogether 91 bars to remain open after 11 pm, which includes 64 bars permitted to function until 1 am, and 27 bars allowed to operate up to 4 am.
These bars with late night operation licences are restricted to only five municipal areas namely Panaji, Mapusa, Ponda, Mormugao, Margao as well as the coastal villages.
Coming out with this information, the department of excise revealed that 7,000-odd bars in Goa have been issued licences to function till 11 pm. It was also informed that the government had finalised an annual fee of Rs 50,000 for every bar, which desired to function till 1 am, while an annual fee of Rs 2 lakh was earmarked for those bars, which wanted to remain open from 1 am to 4 am.
However, presently the government has kept its decision to issue late night licences to bars on hold, until formulation of a new related policy, which will have provision for a scrutiny committee. The committee will check the location of the bars as well as reasons cited by their owners, before issuing any new late night licences to them.
Meanwhile, women’s organisations have presented a memorandum to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar requesting him to issue a notification declaring 11 pm as the closing time for all bars in the state, and further cancel all licences issued to the bars to remain open from 11 pm to 4 am. These organisations have warned that if the government fails to fulfil their demands, a statewide agitation would be launched soon. The representatives of the organisations have also sought an appointment with the Chief Minister.
The department of excise further informed that it has received no new application seeking permission to remain open till 4 am.
