MARGAO: The Goa State Pollution Control Board has begun the process of issuing notices to polluting stone crushers in the Sao Jose de Areal-Sarzora-Dramapur-Gudi belt to show cause why their operations should not be shut within seven days.
The Pollution Control Board has also written letters to the panchayats of Sao Jose de Areal, Sarzora, Gudi and Dramapur with a request to supply electricity in order to install Ambient Air quality stations in the villages to monitor the effect of operation of stone crushing units in the locality.
The closure notices were issued to seven erring units, while notices to rectify the minor defects were issued to 24 units by the Board on Thursday. While 17 units were found not in operation, the condition of 11 units was found satisfactory.
In the notice issued to Ms Mallikarjun Crushing Co at Sao Jose de Areal, the Pollution Control Board said the crusher was operating without valid consent to operate from the Board. During inspection, the Board found that the unit had failed to install water sprinklers to contain dust pollution. It was further noticed that the unit had not provided wind breaking walls and was found wanting in the regular cleaning and wetting of the ground within the premises.
The GSPCB in a notice issued to a stone crusher named Ms Sandhya Enterprises located at Sarzora, the Board noticed that the unit has not provided metalled roads within the premises and has failed to provide green belt along the periphery.
GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Norohna said that the seven erring units have been served seven days notice to show cause why their operations should not be closed down for violating the provisions of the Water and Air Act. “Our teams will initiate further action against the erring units after the expiry of the seven days notice,” he asserted.
