NEERI team in Goa to study macro-level impact of mining (Herald)

January 3, 2014 It will recommend optimal level of fresh mining that can be underatken TEAM HERALD PANJIM: A team of scientists from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has arrived in Goa to study impact of mining on the State. NEERI is mandated to recommend the optimal level of fresh ore extraction that can be permitted in the State. Sources in the department said that two member NEERI team has arrived to conduct the macro-level impact of mining on the flora and fauna and locals. The six-month extensive study will also assess impacts of noise, vibration, and landfills on environment. Based on the study, an analysis will be carried out for capping on fresh excavations by factoring in future generation equity and sustainable development. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that even after resumption of mining, State will not allow fresh extraction till NEERI determines the optimum level of fresh mining that can be undertaken in the state. “The state government has communicated with NEERI to determine and recommend the optimal level of fresh mining that can be undertaken in Goa,” Government had said in its Mining Policy. “Pending this study, no fresh proposal for environmental clearances and no fresh production of iron ore from existing mines shall take place,” it added. http://www.heraldgoa.in/News/Local%20News/NEERI-team-in-Goa-to-study-macro-level-impact-of-mining/83848.html
