Construction quality of school building worries locals (ToI)

TNN | Jan 20, 2014, 03.34 AM IST MARGAO: Public concerns over safety of new constructions found an echo at the gram sabha of the Nuvem village pachayat held on Sunday with gram sabha members voicing apprehensions over the quality of construction of a school building coming up in the village. Villagers pointed out at the gram sabha that the school management has constructed more than the number of the floors approved for the building, thereby violating the provisions of the construction license. They also stated that on one side of the building, the foundation was laid on a nallah thereby blocking the flow of rainwater. Also, hill cutting for the construction of the building was done without following proper norms, gram sabha members alleged. "After learning about what happened in Canacona, it is imperative that the safety of the building be checked, as also the pressure on the land and the diversion of water due to hill cutting," Jose Andrade said, while raising the issue atthe gram sabha. Villagers also brought to the notice of the panchayat the unsafe conditions for the public along the newly constructed bypass road from Nuvem-Arlem junction to Tata showroom at Verna. With increasing flow of traffic, the locals demanded that proper measures be put in place urgently by the authorities to ensure safety of the road users. As a start, they asked for temporary arrangement of speed breakers or traffic cops be posted to regulate the traffic. It was informed that the panchayat has forwarded the resolution submitted to it over the issue to all concerned authorities. The villagers also demanded to know the result of the analysis of the industrial slag that was used for the construction of the bypass road. To this, the sarpanch replied that the Goa state pollution control board (GSPCB) was yet to submit its report to the panchayat and assured to make it public once it is received. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Construction-quality-of-school-building-worries-locals/articleshow/29077537.cms
