Accuses media of conspiracy (Herald)
January 4, 2014
OLD GOA: Slamming the media for sensationalism, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said there is a conspiracy in the media to portray his government negatively.
Parrikar was speaking at a meeting organized at Old Goa Panchayat, on Friday, to mobilize support for the Vijay Sankalp rally, among the people of Cumbarjua constituency.
“During the earlier Congress regime, there were scams of crores of rupees which used to give enough fodder for the media,” said Parrikar while stating that ever since his government took over, the media does not get such news and even a petty theft gets wide coverage.
“By reporting such petty theft cases, the media is saying that crime rate has gone up,” chided Parrikar while slamming the media for creating unnecessary hype on the issue.
“In Goa, there are umpteen newspapers and media channels and they are resorting to sensationalism so that they survive the competition,” Parrikar added.
On the reports appearing in a section of the media that the government has no money to undertake development works in the State, Parrikar said his government is still paying the pending bills of the previous government.
“If my government did not have funds, then several major developmental activities in the State would not have commenced,” he said while stating that his government has been able to recover about Rs 350 crore on ore dumps.
“From mining leases, my government recovered over Rs 400 crore,” he said while stating that from Sunburn festival itself, the government was able to garner Rs 8 crore by levying various taxes, where the earlier government could earn only Rs 1 crore.
