PANJIM: Minority communities in Goa have found a negligible representation in new police recruitments this year. Of the 643 police constables recruited by the Goa Police Department since January 1this year, 26 are from the Christian community and 15 from the Muslim community. Catholics had a 4.04 per cent representation while Muslims had a 2.33 percent representation. The minority community together made up only 6.38 per cent of total recruitments.
Out of the 31 police constables (Armed Police) recruited in the 3rd India Reserve Battalion in the Goa Police Department this year, three were from the Muslim Community and one was from the Christian community. Together the minorities formed 12.91 per cent of those recruited.
Out of the 23 police sub-inspectors (Armed Police) recruited in the 3rd India Reserve Battalion in the Goa Police Department this year only one Catholic name featured. No Muslim was among those recruited.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who holds the Home portfolio provided the details of the new police recruitments in the State assembly session earlier this week.
The posts for police constables in the Goa police department were advertised in August last year, five months after the Parrikar government took over.
For the reserved battalion the posts for police constables were advertised in November and posts for police sub-inspectors were advertised in January. The final interviews for
new recruits took place between February and April of this year.
