Religion in governance (Letter)
(Letter To Editor published in herald dtd. 07/09/2013)
Religion in governance
The Chief Minister's comments to the ‘New York Times’ that Goan Catholics are culturally Hindus in their thinking and practices unlike the Brazilian Catholics, only goes to show his increasing preoccupation with religion in governance. His claims about violence having no place in Hinduism does not really match up to his actions. Are we to believe that the CM will not use his position to protect his Hindu supporters who resort to violence against other communities? And for that matter violence need not necessarily be physical violence alone. Even discriminatory thinking and acting to alienate or forcibly control certain sections of society also amounts to violence. Will the CM swear that he is above board when it comes to shielding violent Hindus and discrimination in governance?
