PANAJI: A year after mining operations ground to a halt in Goa, there exists a paradox of sorts in the state.
The state's miners are hoping that the Supreme Court's decision will be favourable to them, while a number of people residing in the mining areas hope for the opposite.
Mining company officials TOI spoke to said they are waiting for the Supreme Court's decision to send men and machinery into their mines again.
But, in Advalpal village, residents are glad that they can breathe in air that is not polluted by mining dust, and hear the sounds of a village in peace rather than the constant drone of mining machinery. They are among those who don't want mining to restart in the coming weeks and months.
Mining came to a halt in September last year after the Shah commission report pegged losses to the state due to illegal mining at Rs 35,000 crore. With the apex court slated to hear the mining cases before it next week, a decision is expected soon.
