GRE objects to Sancoale, Siridao marina projects (ToI)

GRE objects to Sancoale, Siridao marina projects TNN | Sep 8, 2013, 04.11 AM IST PANAJI: Dredging of lakhs of cubic metres of earth, construction activity for setting up marinas and polluting activities like refueling and repairs related to the sector will irreparably affect the livelihoods of hundreds of traditional fishermen in Zuari river, Goenchea ramponnkarancho ekvott (GRE) stated. The GRE has raised apprehensions over reports that Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has permitted two marinas in the Zuari river in the proposed 2 lakh sq m water area. The tourism department also has plans to set up four marinas to attract high-end tourists, though, the locations are not disclosed yet. In a press note, the GRE objected to the twin marinas in Sancoale bay and off Siridao village nearby, stating that these areas are rich fishing grounds that have sustained traditional fishermen for centuries. "The damage caused will be irreparable. The dredging and construction of breakwaters will disturb the seabed and adversely affect our livelihood and the ecology of the area, thus directly impacting the catch of traditional fishermen," the press note stated. GRE also said that the fishermen's gillnets and the free movement of canoes and boats will be affected by the enhanced marine activity, which will include refueling, repair and painting of boats. These activities could engage toxic and polluting materials. GRE further stated high-end tourism projects are welcome but not at the cost of the traditional inhabitants, who are already facing threats of displacement under the guise of 'state development'. The Sancoale-St Jacinto island-Chicalim bay is a contiguous area used by thousands of families from Bogmalo, Baina, Velsao, Utorda, Majorda, Cortalim, Quelossim and Dabolim to collect clams and other shellfish. Traditional fishermen are also engaged in gillnet fishing and phutanis (stakes). In Siridao, families from Siridao, Goa Velha, and Curca are engaged in fishing thetraditional way for centuries, being either ramponkars or through gilnet fishing and phutanis. GRE reminded that the BJP government had promised to respect and fulfill late Matanhy Saldanha's legacy. Saldanha had opposed the powers of MPT to lease out large tracts of water, and the BJP should adhere to its manifesto assurances, the press note stated. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/GRE-objects-to-Sancoale-Siridao-marina-projects/articleshow/22406908.cms
