Tourism War - Migrants V/s Locals - Just the Beginning

6 two-wheelers set on fire in Calangute TNN | Mar 12, 2013, 03.04 AM IST CALANGUTE: Six two-wheelers belonging to rent-a-bike operator AgneloSequeira were burnt in the early hours of Saturday by an employee of a resort in Gauravaddo, Calangute. Hotel employee Raj Phuyal, a Nepali, was arrested and later released by the Calangute police who have registered the offence under Section 435 of the IPC. Sequeira said that business rivalry is the reason behind the arson incident. Relating the sequence of events to TOI, he said that on the day before the incident, he had requested the hotel employee to shift two motorcycles which had been parked in a spot which is normally used by him to park his taxis. He claimed that his six motorcycles were burnt in retaliation. He said that the employees of the resort were upset with him for shifting their motorcycles. The entire incident was recorded on the CCTV of a neighbouring resort which helped identify the culprits. The Calangute police were intimated later on Saturday, following which they registered an offence and after checking the CCTV footage, arrested Phuyal, who was later released on bail. Alleging deterioration in the law-and-order situation in the village, Calangute panchayat member Joseph Sequeira submitted a memorandum to chief minister Manohar Parrikar to take strict action against the culprits. According to sources, there is stiff competition between rent-a-bike operators in the area adjoining Holiday Street. Sequeira, who resides in the area, represents the ward. Talking to TOI, he said that the hotel employee who allegedly set the two-wheelers on fire is a non-Goan, and such incidents of violence against native Goans by non-Goans have been rising. "If the current trend persists, Calangute will see further dramatic crimes by migrant workers," he stated in the memorandum to the chief minister. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/6-two-wheelers-set-on-fire-in-Calangute/articleshow/18919383.cms
