PANJIM: Thousands of students from different schools across the State participated in the Surya Namaskara programme on Monday morning, to mark the 150th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
In Mormugao taluka, about 7,000 students took part in the Surya Namaskara and the five different grounds chosen for mass Surya Namaskar were the Cortalim school playground, SAG ground Chicalim, Bhute-Bhat ground of SAG, Regina Mundi School ground and Deep Vihar Secondary School ground.
In Canacona taluka, about 1,627 students from 17 high schools and two HSSs in Canacona taluka participated in the Surya Namaskara at four centres in the taluka.
The main event was held at Mini Sports Complex, Chaudi, and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, ADEI Canacona officials and others were present on the occasion.
About 526 students from four high schools and one HSS took part in the programme. About 537 students from six high schools and one HSS participated in the Surya Namaskara at Nirakar Ground, Maxem-Loliem, while there were 324 students from four high schools at Karvem-Gaondongrim ground and 242 students at the Agonda Sports Grounds. Tawadkar garlanded the portrait of Swami Vivekanand on the occasion.
Chief guest Dr Guruprasad Kapdi highlighted the importance of yoga and said every youth should follow Vivekananda’s path and work hard with dedication and sincerity to make India a superpower. Bicholim taluka ADEI Sarveda Gaonkar, Shrikrishna Dhond, Deu Pal and others were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, in Porvorim, over 1,500 students participated in the Suryanamaskar programme organized by Vidhyaprabhodini Parivar.
“Surya Namaksara is esteemed exercise among people of all ages from kids to old people. This exercise can bring about physical, mental, intellectual, social and emotional development of humans. Hence, everybody should perform this exercise regularly,” said educationist Datta B Naik, while addressing students during the programme.
Earlier, Vallabh Kelkar stated that the idea behind organizing the Surya Namaskara event is to make the students aware of the benefits of yoga to help them lead a healthy life.
