PWD begins 24-hr water supply in Socorro - Herald

October 5, 2012 TEAM HERALD bureau@herald-goa.com PORVORIM: The Public Works Department (Water Division) has started 24-hour water supply to about 1,500 houses in Arrarim, Lima Wado and Bhutki Wado in Socorro village. The timings of water supply to the remaining areas of Porvorim have also been increased by half an hour. Speaking to Herald, PWD Assistant Engineer, V M Chavan said the new 50 MLD water treatment plant at Assonora has been fully commissioned. “As against the actual daily water requirement of 20 cubic meters, Porvorim now gets about 19 cubic meters daily from the Assonora Reservoir. Since there has been an increase in water supply, PWD has started releasing water to Arrarim, Lima Wado and Bhutki Wado in Socorro village for 24 hours each day,” said Chavan. “Since these areas have been connected directly to the old water pipeline, it has become easier for us to release the water. The timings of water supply to remaining areas of Porvorim have been increased by half an hour,” added Chavan. Chavan further said the PWD needed additional storage capacity to increase the water supply timings to remaining areas of Porvorim. “We have decided to construct two or three underground water reservoirs of 3,000 cubic meters, similar to one in PDA colony,” he added. “PWD has identified the areas and the process has started. Once the storage capacity is increased, the timings of water supply to remaining areas will also be increased substantially,” said Chavan. Executive Engineer, Kamaladini, stated that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has informed PWD that people should get water supply for 24 hours by 2014 and to achieve this objective, they have been directed to work out plans. “Within the next few years, the PWD will supply enough water to residents of Porvorim for sufficient time, if not for 24 hours,” assured Kamaladini. http://www.heraldgoa.in/News/Local%20News/PWD-begins-24-hr-water-supply-in-Socorro/65220.html
